Not Sleeping or Resting Well? Try One of These at Bedtime...

Currently, there is a lot of research being done on sleep and how good or bad rest affects a person's ability to perform at their optimum level each day and have a healthier lifestyle. Interestingly, in all the research that is being done, very little of it considers the role a good bed plays in getting quality rest.

We think a high quality, comfortable, and supportive bed is the foundation of good sleep. If you aren't sleeping as well as you'd like, perhaps, you should consider a new bed system. Over the last few years, new types of sleep systems have been developed and existing bedding technologies have improved dramatically just like everything else from cars to computers.

People used to think a harder bed was the answer to sleep problems. Our belief is that correct support is the key issue and once good support is provided, then a person can choose the firmness that is most comfortable for them. Since most people toss or turn many times each night whether they know it or not (not to mention getting up to check on the children, having a drink of water, or going to the bathroom), a bed that also gives a high degree of motion separation is critical. That way one person's movements are far less likely to affect their sleeping partner and vice versa.

There's been another revelation in sleep science. Moveable bed bases aren't just for hospitals anymore. Many premium beds are now available with high quality moveable bases that provide better rest as well as enhancement of leisure activities such as reading, watching TV, or working on a laptop computer. A moveable base allows a person to elevate their head and torso slightly, or as much as they want, which can potentially help to reduce issues such as nighttime breathing challenges, vertigo, and snoring.

When the legs and knees are slightly elevated, it helps reduce tension on the lower back muscles which means a person may be less likely to have a sore lower back in the morning. Many people find that sleeping on their back can be very comfortable, but they can't do it in their beds because they can't get comfortable or they snore too much. If you like to sleep in your reclining chair, but not in your bed, you should consider buying a new bed with a moveable base. Correctly fitted ergonomic pillows, which we'll discuss later, can be very beneficial too.

At Fendon's we have been selling beds longer than anyone else in Inyo or Mono County and we believe we know and understand beds and sleep technology as well or better than most stores selling bedding products anywhere today. For over 50 years, my father, Jerry Fendon has been involved with quality bedding. In 1949, he was working with Dickenson's furniture in Ontario, California. It was then that he started traveling up and down the Eastern Sierra picking up furniture to reupholster and mattresses to rebuild and return to their owners on his next trip "to the valley." Eventually, Dad moved to Bishop and together with his wife and my mother, Shirley, they established Fendon's Furniture and Reuhpholstery.

In the 1960s, bed rebuilding was a dying art as most people preferred to just buy a new bed when their old one was worn out. Mom and Dad initially started selling beds from Englander in the 1960s in our first formal store location next to the old Copper Kettle restaurant in Bishop. But, Dad believed that Englander's line was limited in its application to all customers so he continued doing research into who made the best beds with the best sleep technology. In time, he discovered the Simmons Beautyrest® bedding line and Fendon's became the exclusive Simmons Beautyrest® dealer in the Eastern Sierra…and we have been ever since.

In the mid-1920s Simmons had developed the Beautyrest® Individually Pocketed Coil Spring Sleep System. Although Simmons was well-established and had been building beds since 1870, the Beautyrest® individually pocketed coil was a revolution in bedding since it allowed the mattress to individually conform to and support each person sleeping on it. It also provided a high degree of motion separation so a person was far less likely to wake their partner up if they moved or got out of bed in the night.

For over 30 years, Fendon's has been a Simmons Beautyrest® dealer because we've always tried to seek out and bring our customers high quality home furnishings products and technologies. Many manufacturers have tried to copy Simmons Beautyrest® bedding designs, but Simmons is still the leader in individually pocketed coil spring sleep systems. Simmons continues to innovate and in 2000, Simmons developed and introduced the "no-flip" mattress because they were listening to what consumers wanted. Simmons mattresses no longer have to be flipped or rotated.

Recently, most other bedding manufacturers have copied Simmons no-flip design. Simmons also redesigned and enhanced their entire Beautyrest® line with improved individually pocketed coils, more supple and luxurious covers, and better filling and padding materials. Simmons continues to be a leader in the bedding industry with better sleep innovations and some of the finest sleep systems available.

From the time I was a small child, I helped my parents in our business. I soon learned that we would only sell high quality products, treat our customers with honesty and fairness, and we would "stand behind" what we sold. We have always believed that quality products and services are the least expensive and the most satisfying in the long run. I also learned to always be alert to new ideas and products that could benefit our customers.

Tempur-Pedic's® pressure relieving sleep system takes supportive, comfortable conformability, and motion separation to levels previously unseen in the sleep industry. The cells of the Tempur-Pedic® viscoelastic material actually and automatically shift position and reorganize to conform to your body contours, relieving pressure by evenly distributing your body weight over the entire surface area. Tempur-Pedic's® research found that as the material molds to your shape, your body becomes supported in an anatomically correct position… with your neck and spine in correct alignment.

Tempur-Pedic® has also created a revolution in pillows. A good pillow should fill the natural curve between a person's neck and shoulders providing good support and helping to relieve and prevent pain - much like a good lumbar support does in a chair or car seat. Tempur-Pedic® Swedish Neck Pillows are made of the same originally-developed-for-NASA "TEMPUR" pressure relieving material as their mattresses. Tempur-Pedic's® research also shows that these dual-lobed temperature-sensitive pillows promote proper sleeping posture - cradling your head, neck, and spine in correct alignment

An average person spends about 8 hours in bed each night so if a person spends 8 hours a night sleeping, he or she will spend 1/3 of his or her life in bed! Lately, it seems that people are becoming more aware of the integral role good rest and therefore a good bed plays in a healthful, high quality lifestyle, and that a quality sleep system is an excellent investment in their daily well-being.
