Our Story

Thank you for sharing some of your valuable time with us to learn about our family-owned and operated business. Jerry Fendon started serving customers throughout the Eastern Sierra in 1949. Back then, Jerry lived in Ontario, CA and made the trip up the Owens Valley into Inyo and Mono Counties stopping in all of the little towns along the way including Lone Pine, Independence, Big Pine, Bishop, Mammoth or Mammoth Lakes, June Lake and Lee Vining. During those days, Jerry would pickup furniture to reupholster and mattress sets to rebuild. Then a few weeks later, he would make the trip again to return the beautifully reupholstered furniture and rebuilt mattress sets to his customers throughout the Eastern Sierra, many of whom became lifelong friends.

Jerry and Shirley Rae Fendon

In time, Jerry met Shirley Rae Whorff in Bishop. Jerry and Shirley were eventually married and they established Fendon's Upholstery in Bishop. Shirley Rae's parents, Bill and Mazie Whorff, owned the Copper Kettle coffee shop and the Kittie Lee Inn in downtown Bishop. The Copper Kettle was one of the best restaurants in the area while the Kittie Lee was well known for its hospitality and great atmosphere. For many years, Jerry cooked on the early morning shift starting at 5am with Bill Whorff in the Copper Kettle before going out to the shop (behind the restaurant) around 8:30am in the morning to reupholster furniture for the rest of the day. As a side note, another fine restaurant, Whiskey Creek, is now located where the Copper Kettle and the Kittie Lee Inn used to sit and Fendon's Furniture is still located behind Whiskey Creek in Bishop.

Jerry and Shirley Rae Fendon

For many years, Jerry and Shirley Rae, would travel throughout the whole area from Lone Pine to Mammoth Lakes as well as to June Lake and Lee Vining picking up furniture to reupholster and mattresses to rebuild. Of course they also established a strong base of customers in Bishop and Big Pine too. In the early 1960s, Jerry added new mattress sets and new furniture to Fendon's growing repertoire of products and services. Throughout the 60's, 70's and 80's, Jerry and Shirley grew the business and remodeled the building numerous times going from the original 800 square foot building to the current 13,000 square foot building located behind Whiskey Creek in Bishop. In 2007, Jerry continued improving the business by building a new 4800 square foot warehouse. The new warehouse has made receiving and delivering furniture more efficient and easier for our hard-working staff.

Jerry and Shirley still love the business and even now, they still work in the store most days. Shirley helps in the office answering phones and calling customers to thank them for their business. Jerry continues to manage the reupholstery, wood refinishing and furniture repair shop and does all of the shop estimates. He especially loves the creative aspect of working in the shop solving problems and creating beautifully restored pieces of furniture. Fendon's talented and experienced craftspeople can do anything from reupholstering a beautiful heirloom sofa to refurbishing restaurant booths and chairs. They can also beautifully restore wood and most antique furniture as well as repair damaged or broken furniture such as we often repair for condominium or "condo" rentals in Mammoth Lakes and property managers and vacation or 2nd homeowners throughout the area.

Jerry and Shirley's son, Randy Fendon, runs the retail furniture and mattress side of the business working with the sales team to manage buying, doing marketing and handling the financial components of the business. Randy loves to find innovative or new products that Fendon's customers will love and find valuable. In September of 2003, Randy brought in the Tempur-Pedic line of pressure-relieving sleep systems which have been very popular with customers.

Of course, we still do furniture reupholstery, furniture refinishing, furniture repair and antique furniture restoration.

Fendon's continues to actively serve customers from Lone Pine to Mammoth Lakes, June Lake and parts of Nevada too! We make frequent deliveries in the Bishop and Big Pine areas and we make one to four trips to Mammoth Lakes each week depending on our delivery load. We also deliver to Lone Pine, June Lake and Lee Vining as well as deliveries as needed to Tonopah, Hawthorne, Round Mountain and other Nevada locations.

From the start, Fendon's has offered quality service and products. Our business is built on integrity and service that stems from our desire to treat every customer with consideration and respect. We are grateful to have the wonderful people who work with us and help us serve our customers every day including our sales team, office personnel, and shop and delivery staff. Our Showroom behind Whiskey Creek in Bishop

This is the north entrance of our store behind Whiskey Creek in Bishop. The beautiful mural on our building depicts the historic "Slim Princess" narrow gauge train pulling into the Laws Station north of Bishop. This mural was sponsored by Fendon's for the Bishop Mural Society.

Our Home Furnishings Brands
At Fendon's we have a wide variety of quality furniture and mattress lines that we have carefully selected. Even if you don't see what you are looking for on this website or in our store, ask us about it as we can often get special items for our customers and sometimes we'll even take on a new line in order to help our customers find what they are looking for.

When selecting a line of furniture for our store, we always look for products from quality manufacturers that have style, are made well and have great features. We also look for manufacturers that will "stand behind" their products because no one and no company is always perfect. When we encounter the occasional legitimate warranty defect with a manufacturer's product, we want to know that manufacturer is going to "make it right" for our customer.

Because we believe treating our customers with integrity and honesty is critical, we want to only work with manufacturers that feel the same way. We've been in business over 60 years because we do our best to totally satisfy each one of our customers. When there is a problem that is legitimately a manufacturer's or our problem and not caused by our customer, we try to do whatever is necessary to totally resolve the problem and make sure our customer is completely happy with the solution.

Exclusive Brands and The Reasons We Carry Them
Over the many years we have been in business, we have become the exclusive dealer in Inyo and Mono Counties for a number of industry leading furniture and mattress lines. In addition to those lines, we have many other lines of furniture too. In each case where we are the exclusive dealer, the manufacturers felt we were the most substantial store in the area and felt we could best represent their lines and service them. From our standpoint, we knew each of these lines had something special and unique to offer our customers. Here are some of the most recognizable lines we carry for which we are the exclusive dealer in Inyo and Mono Counties as well as some of the reasons why we carry these lines.

La-Z-Boy Reclining Chairs, Sofas, Loveseats and Sleepers
We've been the exclusive La-Z-Boy dealer for the Eastern Sierra since the early 1970's. La-Z-Boy is highly respected and widely known as the oldest and the best reclining chair company in the United States. They have a patented reclining chair mechanism that offers more comfort positions and ergonomic support than any other brand. It is also one of the most durable reclining chairs made and since it is exclusively patented by La-Z-Boy, no other manufacturer can copy it! La-Z-Boy also offers more custom fabric choices than almost any other manufacturer. Additionally, La-Z-Boy makes a wide variety of high-quality sofas, loveseats and sleeper sofas. Many of our customers throughout the Eastern Sierra and especially in Mammoth Lakes and June Lake find sleeper sofas especially valuable in providing more sleeping space for guests. As with the reclining chairs, there is a huge variety of custom fabric choices available for all La-Z-Boy furniture. La-Z-Boy truly is one of the most important American furniture manufacturers and Fendon's is your exclusive dealer for Bishop, Mammoth Lakes and the Eastern Sierra. Most people will spend one quarter to one third of their lives in bed! Getting good rest allows us to re-charge for the next day and it is very important to our quality of life including our daily productivity and enjoyment of life. A quality mattress set that can conform to your individual shape while fully supporting you without creating pressure on your body is a critical part of getting a restful night's sleep.

Additionally, a mattress set that that significantly reduces transfer of movement across the surface of the mattress allows two people to sleep more soundly on the same bed because their individual movements are less likely to awaken each other and disrupt their sleep. At Fendon's, all but our most inexpensive mattress sets provide conforming support while providing the potential for significantly reducing pressure points on your body. Pressure points are one of the key causes of tossing and turning at night and by reducing pressure points a person is more likely to sleep and rest deeply. Our mattresses also dramatically limit movement across the surface of the mattress so a couple sleeping on one of them is less likely to wake each other up.

Although some people have health issues that make it difficult for them to sleep and rest well, it may be worth taking a look at the age, condition and technology of your current mattress set before beginning a drug or therapy program to help you sleep better, unless of course, you actually have a health problem that requires such treatment in which case you should always follow the advice of your health care provider. In many cases though, a new mattress with the correct firmness and support can make a big improvement in the quality of rest a person experiences each night.

We encourage our customers to come into the store, learn more about the superior technology of the mattress sets we carry and take plenty of time in the store to actually try the mattresses they are interested in before making a purchase. We'll help you understand what makes a good bed and we'll invite you to spend as much time as you need to find the perfect mattress set for you. Our sales team is well-qualified to answer your questions and guide you to your perfect bed. We encourage you to come in or call us soon to find out more!

Tempur-Pedic Pressure-Relieving Sleep Systems
We've been the exclusive Tempur-Pedic dealer for Inyo and Mono Counties since the Fall of 2003. Tempur-Pedic is the originator of the Tempur-Pedic pressure-relieving sleep systems based on their Tempur pressure-relieving material. Many manufacturers have tried to duplicate the Tempur material, but since it is a proprietary formula that is nearly impossible to perfectly duplicate, no other manufacturer has been able to replicate the quality, comfort, pressure-relieving support, and the motion reduction properties of genuine Tempur and Tempur-Pedic sleep systems.

You really have to try a genuine Tempur-Pedic to experience how good these sleep systems are. With the Tempur-Pedic in-home trial program, you can try a real Tempur-Pedic in your home for 90 days. If you don't like it after a minimum of 30 days, you can return it for a full refund less a minimum $250 return fee charged by Tempur-Pedic. Since various Tempur-Pedic sleep systems have different return charges, call us for more details on the in-home trial program and return fees.

We can also have your new Tempur-Pedic sleep set shipped to you outside of our regular delivery areas in Inyo and Mono Counties. We have shipped numerous Tempur-Pedic pressure-relieving sleep systems to customers in Southern California and we can have them shipped to you just about anywhere in the United States with full-service delivery and setup. Call or email us for information and pricing.

We always recommend you come into the store and try out the Tempur-Pedic models we have on display before trying the bed in your home on the in-home trial program. We'll explain the various models and features and then give you plenty of time to experience them before making your choice. Come into Fendon's today and experience a genuine Tempur-Pedic sleep system for yourself.

Simmons Beautyrest Pocketed Coil Spring Mattress Sets
In 1972, Fendon's became a Simmons Beautyrest dealer. At that time with years of mattress rebuilding knowledge, Jerry Fendon, sought out what he believed was the best mattress technology available and it was Beautyrest by Simmons. Although the Simmons company began in 1870, it was 1925 when Simmons developed the individually-pocketed coil spring Beautyrest mattress.

Simmon's individually-pocketed coils were a revolution in the mattress industry as they allowed the bed to give excellent support while conforming to the individual shape of each person sleeping on it. Beautyrest mattresses also dramatically reduced "pressure points" and the transfer of movement across the surface of the mattress.

Simmons has continued to innovate and improve its pocketed coil spring Beautyrest mattresses and they continue to lead the industry in this technology. Today, Simmons has a wide range of high-quality mattress sets that continue to offer excellent conforming support while reducing pressure on the body and minimizing motion transfer on the surface of the mattress.

Community Support
We've long believed in supporting worthwhile causes, activities and charitable organizations in the communities where we do business. We feel it is important to give back to our communities as one way of saying "thank you" for all of the support they have given us by doing business with us over the years. We would also support these activities and organizations even if we weren't doing business in the local communities where they reside as we genuinely believe in what they do and the good they achieve.

In addition, there are countless smaller community activities we support. We can't mention them all here, but here is a brief list of some of the organizations we've supported in substantial or regular financial, merchandise or labor donations.

Big Pine "Center Fire" Relief Effort
Fendon's was grateful to be able to donate 3 large truckloads of new and used furniture and mattress sets to survivors of the Big Pine "Center Fire" which destroyed multiple homes and property in Big Pine in March 2011.

ICARE - Inyo County Animal Resources and Education
We love to support the annual dinner fundraiser and auction with a valuable mattress set or piece of furniture they can auction to raise money for their annual operating budget.

Home Street Middle School Library and Washington D.C Student Learing Program
At Principal Randy Cook's request, we provided furniture for the library revitalization project.

Mammoth Hospital
Each year we are proud to provide a unique piece of furniture for the Mammoth Hospital's Festival of Trees fundraiser auction.

Big Pine High School
Donation of a La-Z-Boy reclining chair for a school fund raiser.

California-Hawaii Elks Association - Major Project Therapy and Treatment for Disabled Children
Every three to five years we reupholster the large mats the therapist and children use for their rehabilitative exercises in the Bishop, CA program.

Bishop Mural Society
Although the current status of the Bishop Mural Society as an organization is uncertain, we actively donated time and money to various mural projects on downtown buildings in Bishop. Everyone involved in these beautiful murals is very proud of them and Bishop has become well-known for its rich variety of historical murals. We also donated the upper portion of the north end of our building for a mural depicting the "Slim Princess" narrow gauge steam train arriving at Laws Station north of Bishop. In fact, we paid the full cost of this expensive mural thereby saving the Bishop Mural Society a substantial expense. See the "Slim Princess" mural below.

Bishop Country Club
We regularly provide auction items such as La-Z-Boy reclining chairs to the Bishop Country Club including the Men's and Women's clubs for their fundraisers.
